First Aid and Concussion Awareness Provided to Coaches
The MSHSL emphasizes health and safety in its programs. The “Anyone Can Save A Life” initiative, which is part of the MSHSL's health and safety resources, focuses on emergency action planning and first aid training. Additionally, the MSHSL's Sports Medicine Advisory Committee addresses health and safety issues affecting student-athletes, including concussion protocols, heat-related illnesses, and injury prevention and treatment.
Along with the required Head Coaches Course, the MSHSL provides annual training each coach must complete to be eligible to coach. These trainings include concussion awareness and return to play protocols. SPPS also requires coaches to take NFHS courses, including first aid and heat illness awareness courses.
The Saint Paul Public Schools Athletics Department is committed to the health and safety of all student-athletes. While these measures provide important support, it is ultimately the responsibility of parents and guardians to seek appropriate medical care and follow-up treatment for their student-athlete. Partnering together in this way ensures that students receive the best possible care, stay healthy, and can safely enjoy their sports experience.
